Human Rights for the Deaf

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities declares that people with disabilities have the right to enjoy full human rights. This convention holds that the core factors for the human rights of Deaf people are access to and recognition of sign language including acceptance of and respect for Deaf people’s linguistic and cultural identity, bilingual education, sign language interpreting and accessibility.

A recent international study reveals that only 30 of 93 countries recognize deaf people as equal citizens, formally recognize sign language in legislation, and have a sign language dictionary. Fortunately Mexico falls within the favorable category.
